the Aurunci mountains represent a complex of great importance for the particular characteristic of being among the Italian mountain ranges that exceed 1,500 meters in height, the one closest to the sea. the highest peak, the Petrella (d. 1533), is just five kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast as the crow flies. this position of middle and high mountain overlooking the sea, determines the characteristics of the very special from the point of view of climate and environmental, that flora and fauna.
